"G" is for Wine: Guler Sabanci

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

Guler SabanciThis week's Economist has a feature story on one of my favorite corporate citizens, Guler Sabanci,* looking ever so much like a chef in her baseball-toting photo (right). When I wrote my own feature on her for Forbes back in 1999 entitled "Turkey's Tire Queen," I was earmarking her as one of the most important and powerful businesswomen in the world.

Of course, being a Foodie, I was also very interested in her private "G" wine label. While I lived in Turkey, national wines were transformed from the inconsistent and sometimes undrinkable into export-quality stuff (click here to read a recent The Washington Times advertorial). Now, there are even wine tours there.

Three years after "Turkey's Tire Queen" was published, her uncle Sakip from his deathbed appointed Guler head of the Sabanci Group in Turkey, which has kept her in global news media like Forbes, The Financial Times, and TIME. Her position in Turkey is publicly acknoledged in the press.

So, here's to you, Guler: şerefe (cheers)!

* Turkish orthography is "Güler Sabancı."
