Daniel Boulud: Making It Big on Oprah's O
By JULIETTE ROSSANT If you recall from last year (see previous article), Force Four Pruductions was preparing a new show for Oprah's Oxygen channel called Making It Big. According to TV Week, the show will air Mondays, not Tuesday, and the launch has been pushed back from March to April 25. Making It Big is a six-part series on dream jobs for aspiring chefs, choreographers, fashion designers, hairstylists, wedding planners, and entertainment reporters, according to Broadcasting & Cable. Special guests include chef Daniel Boulud, designer Cynthia Steffe, entertainment reporter Dayna Devon, and video choreographer Jamie King. Host and judge will be advertising guru Linda Kaplan Thaler, co-author of Bang! (New York: Random House, 2003). In a recent article about her, The New Yorker noted that Thaler is doing the show to promote herself and her agency -- “like doing a new business pitch." Further, The New Yorker claims she advised in her book, “Don’t worry about whether the news is good or bad. Just get covered... PR breeds PR.” I guess Rocco DiSpirito and some others have been reading Bang!... Let's see whether Making It Big makes Thaler & Co. bigger: if not, I'll be interested to hear her thoughts on flops like Emeril (the NBC sitcom) and The Restaurant and the impact of a failed show on a person's career. PR may breed PR, but a TV flop breeds contempt (unless, like Emeril, you already have a strong show).
