Katie Sighting: Day One, Olives

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

Katie Hagan-WhelchelKatie has been sighted! No, no, no: not Katie Couric. You can catch her most weekday mornings on NBC's Today Show (which you should be watching this week to catch Ambassador Joseph Wilson -- click here). No, a superchefblog source reports that Katie Hagan-Whelchel was sighted yesterday working at Olives New York -- and not as head chef.

Pardon, gentle all, but was not the winner of Cooking Under Fire promised the head chef slot at a Todd English restaurant in New York?

According to the most recent installment of Todd's Journal (a journal which superchefblog has documented as less than clear if not unreliable (see previous article), dated June 2005, "tune in to see which talented contestant wins a chef's position at Olives NY."

Oooops! It's one of those "read the fine print" situations: Cooking Under Fire's "about the series" webpage offer "a chef position" at a Todd English restaurant in New York. Apparently, "chef" is interpreted as a position with the word "chef" in it -- and, for all that, Katie is a sous chef at Olives New York. So, once again, good for you, Katie.

Still, who is going to rescue English is Italian?

(Todd also reports: "I have also been hard at work perfecting my line of kitchen essentials, The Todd English Collection, to be ready to launch on The Home Shopping Network" -- isn't that the set being co-designed with the mop queen, Joy Mangano? See previous article.)

This whole concept of enlisting people who have extremely high-pressure jobs, working long hours under hectic and often horrible conditions (that would be chefs) to present themselves in this gladiator-style arena proves what to whom? It is a disheartening form of exploitation. Who benefits from their display of cardiovascular endurance? Good grief, let our chefs have relaxing day off. The last thing they need is more stress.

Status check: Katie is indeed now working for Todd English as Head Chef at Beso (an Eva Longoria venture) in Hollywood.
