John Lennon: Remembering the Eggman
By JULIETTE ROSSANT ![]() It was 25 years ago today that John Lennon was gunned down outside The Dakota (photo) on the Upper West side of New York City. The day will be marked by events from the John Lennon Museum in Tokyo to hometown Liverpool to Strawberry Field in New York City. Did John like his food? Despite periods of heroin-induced scrawniness and subsequent "cold turkey," very much so, as attested by the rise to fame of chef John Noon, a Michelin-rated celebrity chef who cooked for rock stars like the Beatles, Roy Orbison, Phil Collins, and even The Spice Girls, recently brought in as chef at the Montreal in Liverpool. No big surprise about Lennon and food: after all, this is the man caught in Vienna "eating chocolate cake in a bag" (from "The Ballad of John & Yoko"). Reputedly, John (abetted by Yoko) was also an avid Macrobiotic Diet fan in the 1970s (see excerpts from a 1980 Playboy interview). His cookbook of choice, then? The Practically Macrobiotic Cookbook. The man had style and taste: behold his psyachelic Rolls Royce: ![]() John was clearlie a Foodie and one of the most food-obsessed, food-caressing lyricists of modern times -- just check out the lyrics for "I am the Walrus" if you don't know them already. Paul may have been the walrus, but John was our Eggman and always will be. We miss you, Eggman. ![]() Previous articles: Gale Gand on Mr. "Easy-Bake Oven" The Passing of Mr. "Easy-Bake Oven" Julia Child: The Queen is Dead Technorati Tags: superchefblog, Juliette Rossant, super chef, celebrities, chefs, food, restaurants, cooking, branding, cuisine, macrobiotic, Beatles, John Lennon --> back to superchefblog |
