Mother's Day: Perry's
By JULIETTE ROSSANT ![]() Save the stick-to-your ribs barbecue for Father's Day: Mother's Day calls for something more delicate and refined, befitting both the Spring season and the celebration of the amazing women in our lives - not that we don't do that every day...! You could steer mom toward a James Beard Award-winning chef or super shef restaurant, if you could get a reservation. Superchefblog recommends a gem called Perry's. This 20-year-old star of the Adams Morgan district in Washington, DC, is already well known and frequented by commoners, stars, and VIPs alike (see The Washington Post and Washingtonian Magazine reviews), particularly when Sunday brunch rolls around.Of course, not every mother may be up for the drag queen Sunday brunch, especially on Mother's Day (although others of course may find the day particularly appropriate -- "the customer is king"). One secret for Sundays, including Mother's Day, is to head over in the cool evening to enjoy Perry's rooftop -- and the makings from a set of chefs that have elevated Perry's all over again. ![]() First up is Noriaki Yasutake, who trained under his sushi chef father in Fukuoka City, Japan and who more recently won first place of the National Sushi Society of New York's Annual Sushi Competition. Impress mom with that information, and then let her sample a spoon of Chef Noriyaki's tofu noodle, cucumber, uni, ikura and soba sauce -- makes any medicine go down, including more sushi and sashimi, long-time hallmarks of Perry's fame in town. ![]() Also up at bat is pastry chef Leon Baker, who has added desserts to the menu like chocolate souffle cake and lemon pana cotta. Captaining this team for Perry's owner Saied Azali is Jack Abramoff's chef, Morou Outtara (see previous article), as Morou and Leon prepare their own new restaurant for an opening later this year. Stay tuned about Chef Morou's move -- and happy meals with Mom.
