"If you want it, order it."

So says of foie gras Betsy Alger, co-owner of The Frog and The Peach in New Brunswick, NJ, and D'Artagnan customer. “We don’t make anybody order it. That’s the great thing about living in a free country."

New Jersey State Legislature

NJBIZ reported yesterday in an article entitled "Business Set to Battle Food Bans," that New Jersey restaurants and businesses are upset by recent food legislaton -- one to ban trans fats (introduced by state Senator Ellen Karcher [D-Monmouth]), the other to ban production and distribution of foie grais (introduced Assemblyman Michael Panter [D-Monmouth], reportedly a vegetarian).

The New Jersey Restaurant Association objects to government interference. The Rider Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University fears further damage to the New Jersey's reputation as unfriendly to business. As a case in point, D'Artagnan 's owner Ariane Daguine may be considering a move out of state. (Listen to Ariane talk about her business.)

The NJBiz article quoted Michael Pascal, co-owner of Stage Left, an upscale restaurant in New Brunswick, retorts that, “The ducks live a much better life than 99% of the chickens we eat,” says Pascal.

Regarding animal rights, Assemblyman Panter said, "Are there larger problems facing society? Absolutely." So, who got him on the wrong side of the issue.......?
