R. W. Apple Jr. RIP
By COLETTE ROSSANT ![]() I was so saddened when I learned about R. W. Apple's death yesterday. He had had a tremendous impact upon my life as a food journalist. I first met him about 15 years ago at a food event in New York. We both had just come back from a long stay in Japan. Both had loved Japan and were very excited by Japan's food culture. I had just written a story about soba for The New York Times Magazine. When we compared notes, I was impressed not only by his knowledge of Japanese culture but also his sense of history and place. He talked about little known places where he had had great soba and painted his desciptions with such vivid colors that I could easily imagine being there. I always read his New York Times pieces with great excitment, as I knew I would certainly learn something that he had just discovered. He will be missed but never forgotten. ![]() Multimedia: NYT slideshow NYT video remembrance Obituaries: New York Times Wikipedia NPR WCBS Radio International Herald Tribune Independent NY 1 AP ABC News CNN Reuters USAToday New Jersey Star-Ledger Recent news: The News Hour The Nation Slate Carolina Communicator Articles: New York Times (search) Books: Apple's America Apple's Europe Previous articles: Edna Lewis RIP The Passing of Mr. "Easy-Bake Oven" Julia Child: The Queen is Dead Technorati Tags: superchefblog, Juliette Rossant, super chef, celebrities, chefs, food, restaurants, cooking, branding, cuisine, blogging, food blogging --> back to superchefblog |
