Adam Rex: Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich
By JULIETTE ROSSANT Is Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich and Other Stories You're Sure to Like, Because They're All About Monsters and Some of Them are Also About Food. You like Food Don't You? Well, All Right Then (Harcourt 2006) by illustrator-author Adam Rex a kid's book or a book for chef's to chuckle to late at night? Probably both. There are monsters, including the author's photo (Frankenstein wearing Ray Bans). There are stories about The Creature from the Black Lagoon (p. 8), The Middlewich Witch-Watchers Club (p. 10), and disgusting story about that sandwich Frankenstein made –- all of it in verse. Then there is the illustration of Frankenstein in chef's hat on the table of contents page. ![]() Instead of the same style of illustration for each poem, Adam chose a different style. So the book ranges from Gory-esque to Sendak-esque. The dedication gives a hint: The illustrator would like to give thanks to John James Audubon, Richard Scarry, Maurice Sendak, Edward Gorey and the cast and crews of rather a lot of motion pictures from the last eighty-odd years. Probably some other people as well. To these people, and their descendants, he also dedicates this book. There is plenty of food, fun, crazy drawings and cartoons. Adam told Super Chef that the idea of tieing food and monster verse came out of his writing: What sets monsters apart is what they eat -- it tends to be us. What they actually eat is why we should be afraid of them.Adam has a great, ghoulish sense of humor, sure to tickle your inner Yeti or Big Foot – and if it doesn't make you hungry, it will make you think about food in a whole new way. Look for a sequel to Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich and a novel from the prolific Adam in the near future.
