Some would say a meal with out a glass of wine is not worth eating, but to most people around the world, a glass of clean water is more precious and more rare. Water to clean their food, to cook with, to drink, to clean themselves is not a yet a right for all people, it is still the privilege of developed countries.

If you are in New York and can dine out on March 22, you can help children around the world access clean water. UNICEF's is commemorating World Water Day (March 22) in an unusually direct way this year. The Tap Project lets diners at hundreds of participating New York City restaurants donate $1 for the clean drinking water usually served for free. The funds collected will support UNICEF water programs, which provide safe drinking water for children around the world.

Marcus Samuelsson, UNICEF Ambassador, traveled throughout Africa while writing his book The Soul of a New Cuisine (Wiley 2006), and knows well how many people, especially children, are without enough clean water:
Clean and plentiful drinking water is an every day privilege millions take for granted. Yet the lack of clean and accessible drinking water is one of the reasons why millions of children are dying each year of preventable causes. I’m excited for the opportunity to get the New York City restaurant community and our customers involved in supporting this important event.
Visit the Tap Water Project website for a list of participating restaurants, which include Super Chef restaurants like Charlie Palmer's Aureole and Tom Colicchio's Craft to as well as Katz Delicatessen and Zip Burger. You don't need to spend a lot for dinner to give $1 to UNICEF. If you won't be in New York on March 22, then you can donate online. No need to stop at $1 either.

Cheers!
