Listmania: Conde Nast Traveller v. Restaurant Magazine

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movies List making is endemic. It seems these days like there is a list for everything, from the Top 100 movies of all time to the Top 100 Pet Rocks.

Did the Roman Empire suffer from listmania during its long decline?

May seems to be a popular month for issuing restaurant lists.

Restaurant UK

First came the UK's Restaurant magazine's S. Pellegrino World's 50 Best Restaurants chosen by a panel of 22 food writers, critics and chefs. It covers the world, though focuses on Europe, North America with only a sprinkling outside. (Only one restaurant rates in Australia and in India, and oddly none from China make the grade).

El Bulli

The World's #1 is Ferran Adria's El Bulli followed by The Fat Duck which held the top place in last years' list. The change in the top slot is the only change in the top 10. Only one chef has two restaurants on the list. That is Thomas Keller who has two top 10s, The French Laundry, at #4 and Per Se at #9. Click here for the complete list.

Conde Nast Traveler

Not to be outdone,Conde Nast Traveler's 11th annual May "Hot List" issue lists the best newly opened hotels, spas, nightclubs and restaurants around the world. The list, compiled by the magazine's editors, includes 95 new restaurants worldwide. There are plenty in China, the Middle East, and South America, as well as North America and Europe. Click here to see the entire list.

Before you make your summer holiday plans, decide if you want the new best or just the best, and cross your fingers to get a reservation.
