World Ocean Day
By JULIETTE ROSSANT ![]() World Ocean Day sounds like a perfect set up for a presidential candidate trying to hone up his (or her) environmental creds, but it is actually a day to ponder the state of the oceans and their gifts to us – seafood, pets and the sparkling waters that surround our continents. It is also a day to ponder pollution, over fishing and misuse of our blue planet. Around the world aquariums and oceanographic institutes and waterfront communities are celebrating World Ocean Day, June 8, 2007, with programs for families. Chefs, foodies and anyone who has ever opened a can of tuna for lunch, munched on a fish stick or something more sophisticated, should try to join in and learn about the ocean. Check out the World Ocean Day website for details about events near you. If you can't make an event this year, then take a moment on June 8 to learn something about how to clean up our oceans and what you can do year-round.
