Celebrity Chef! The Game

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

Celebrity Chef! The Game

You discover that your favorite chef is not in his restaurant, that he/she is filming an episode of Iron Chef, competing with other chefs in The Next Food Network Star or Top Chef.

What do you do?

Get into the game.

"Celebrity Chef! The Game," that is.

If you can't dine out, at least you can test your culinary knowledge. Well, that is the premise of this new game – part Trivial Pursuit, part board game. You choose a game piece (like in Monopoly); there is a frying pan, tongues, a knife, a corkscrew etc and move around a simple board rolling a die. By answering trivia questions correctly, you collect fans – small discs with stylized silhouettes of customers, tasting or sipping. The object of the game is to collect as many fans as you can and Successes – bigger discs you win by answering Celebrity Chef questions each time you land on a Success place. Collect all the discs (10) or one of each and you win.

The goal is to become a celebrity chef. You have to master Chef School, The Bar, Tools & Techniques, and Name That Dish. Extra fun is the last category called Cook Off, in which two players have 10 seconds to write down as many soup stocks, cookbook titles or pizza toppings as they can. If your six-year old can't write as fast as you can, you might have a chance of winning (make sure he doesn't choose the knife).

It's not like the gaming folk haven't tried to capture the food-obsessed market before. Monopoly has done a lot. Short of the food version of the classic game, there is the beverage version: Wine-opoly. And there are lots of kitche-related Monopoly products, from serving tray to appetizer plates to the mandatory coffee mug.

Is "Celebrity Chef! The Game" fun?

If your middle name is "Foodie," then this game is definitely fun.

Some questions will stump even the most die-hard Food Network fan. Other questions demand that you really know your ingredients.

One thing is certain: be sure to have good nibbles at hand while you wait your turn.
