Judy Sierra: Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie, by Judy Sierra Thelonius Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie (Randomhouse 2007) is "a Revolting Rhyme by Judy Sierra with Delicious Drawings by Edward Koren," the great New Yorker cartoonist.

Thelonius has aspirations as a great chef, who cares if he can't quite follow a recipe - this guy isn't silly (well, yes he is) he's inventive, generous and gracious.

There are alliterations, rhymes, BIG PRINTED words that shout out for giggles even in bigger kids or grown ups.

Thelonius collects flies from all the usual spots, a dumpster, a sewer, and a pile of manure. He makes a crust with a deliciously disgusting concoction of stickiness where the fly's feet (but not their wings!) are stuck fast.

Judy Sierra

Judy even manages to use the wonderful word eleventeen along with whined, whizzed and whooshed. The flap reads: "Warning: this book is deliciously gross... and could be habit-forming." -- Hip, Hip Hoorah for the habit of reading and laughing!
