Barbara Beery: Fairies Cookbook
By JULIETTE ROSSANT Fairies don't go in for protein or vegetables. Barbara Beery's The Fairies Cookbook (Gibbs Smith 2007) explores the seamy world of pink and pastel sugary sweets where fairies dwell. If your daughter, granddaughter or niece (and maybe her side kick brother) dressed up in a fluffy princess costume for Halloween, this is what she is dreaming about for her next gift. You can plan a fairy party where the kids make their own fairy treats.Pretty Butterfly Fairy Masks (p. 10) decorated with candies and colored frosting, starts with refrigerated cookie dough. Why not make your own with the kids' help? Then the cookies will not only be more fun to make, but also better tasting. The Fairy Queen Quiches (p. 25) are mini-quiches decorated with a slice of cherry tomato. Slip in a tiny bit of broccoli or zucchini and they'll be eating a little green without knowing it. ![]() There are faux veggie treats like Woodland Fairy Mushrooms (p. 61) that are chocolate cupcakes with frosting and white candies. And some fruit treats including Tooth Fairy Treats (p. 54) with fruit and frozen yogurt and Fruity Magic Wands (p. 16) that are fruit kebabs. The photographs of the treats will be captivating to fairy enthusiasts. Get the kids to read the recipes, plan what they are going to do, and dream about fairies.
