Food Network 2008 New Shows

Where is the Food Network going and what audience is FN after? Looking at the list that blogger Mork assembled for new shows for which FN and Scripps Networks have filed for trademark, it is hard to see anything very new and exciting to replace Emeril Live! and Mario Batali.

Mork lists:
  • Worst Cook in America
  • Paula's Best Dishes
  • Rescue Chef
  • Danny to the Rescue
  • Dear Food Network
  • Down Home with the Neelys
That is one contest/search show, yet another show from Paula Deen, and two rescue shows in which a chef helps sort out a culinary disaster - we've seen Marcus Samuelsson do this among others. Dear Food Network sounds like a revival of Sara Moulton's excellent show, unfortunately without her.

Down Home with the Neelys

The last show seems the most intriguing. In case you don't know who the Neelys are, Pat and Gina Neely own three barbecue restaurants in Tennessee where celebrities often eat and rave about the food.

Neely's Bar-Be-Que

Super Chef is a big fan of great barbecue and eager to see more Southern food on FN. It is heartening to finally see FN include more African-Americans in its line up. The Neelys will be going up against the popular G. Garvin on TVOne.

On the other hand, maybe Down Home With the Neelys will encourage TVOne to broaden its culinary offering and get more minorities on the air on all the networks.
