Food Network: Three More Years for Alton Brown

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

If you are keeping your score card of Food Network talent, jot down another check under renewal for Alton Brown.

He joins Rachael Ray and Bobby Flay in signing a three-year contract with FN. He will reprise another season of Good Eats, he popular food-as-science-and-drama show for 2008 and he'll host Iron Chef America. He will also be starting in another Feasting on Asphalt limited series, this season called Feasting on Waves, Alton Brown as pirate and explorer in the Caribbean.

Feasting on Asphalt, with Alton Brown

Can't you just picture a cross between Pirates of the Caribbean and Bob the Builder? Super Chef appreciates Alton's ability to raise the bar for informative cooking shows while still appealing to FN's main audience: elementary school kids.

What lured Alton to stay on FN when Mario Batali and Emeril Lagasse (except for his Essence of Emeril show) were ushered off? Unlike Mario and Emeril, Alton doesn't own a restaurant or string of restaurants. But like them (and any other chef who can), he is putting his name on products, in his case Japanese knives - and books. However, Alton does not have a complete line of products for the kitchen. Could it be that after FN launches Bobby Flay-ware at Kohl's, they will offer a line of science-y gizmos designed by Alton? How about mini-ware for the tikes who watch him? The possibilities are unlimited...

Super Chef does not know what's up Alton's sleeve. The press release quotes him like this:
Food Network is my home and I am staying home. I'm looking forward to producing more and varied shows with the network and am especially excited about Feasting on Waves, which will bring a whole new perspective to food.
Super Chef assumes that FN has had to pay dearly for Alton to stay home.
