The Brass Sisters: Queens of Comfort Food
By JULIETTE ROSSANT ![]() The Brass Sisters, self-described slightly rounded women in their 50s, have a passion for heirloom recipes and home cooking. Rather than being trained chefs returning to the home kitchen - Marilynn and Sheila are home-trained and remain concentrated on collecting and using old recipes and old tools. Their book, Heirloom Baking (see Super Chef's review) is full of their humor, graciousness and spirited hunt for interesting recipes and the stories behind them. If you are lucky enough to be in New England, catch The Brass Sisters: Queens of Comfort Food, which airs on WGBH 2 on Sat, Feb 16, 3:30pm. It's an antidote to a slick Food Network Show. The sisters shop, joke with store owners (they get free slices of salami as a reward) - who all adore them - and cook a dinner of comfort food. Each recipe recipe comes with a story - Brad's Moroccan Punch, Dale's Meat Loaf, and Nick's Savory Blue Cheese and Walnut Crackers. Dessert is an obscenely large brown sugar brownie cut with an old fashioned cookie cutter into a giant star topped with ice cream and fudge sauce. The guest each devour a star. "Rounded women in their 50s" ?
Not a grey hair in sight but they trade memories about the appearance of a shop "just after world war two". Mmm.
These self described "unclaimed treasures" bring a new taste to the world of TV cooks.
Caught this show on Saturday...sure, they mug a bit purposefully for the camera - and their Boston accents are to die for - but they seem genuine, warm and are fantastic to watch...hope this becomes a series.
