Emeril Lagasse goes Green

Emeril Lagasse has coined a few terms like Bam! and Kick it up a notch, not to mention Pork fat rules.

What he probably hasn't coined are many nifty saying about buying organic, locally grown, or healthy food. Plenty of other chefs have cornered that trend from Rick Moonen to John Besh, and even Wolfgang Puck. But Emeril? You'd have to count his packaged salad business or shrimp business. Until now. Since loosening his ties with the Food Network, and joining forces with Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Emeril is now ready to recast himself as the Jolly Green … Giant Chef (?) How's Emeril Green?

Planet Green

Emeril Green, slated to air in July, is Emeril's new series for Planet Green channel. The show will focus on fresh, organic and locally grown products and will be shot exclusively at the grocery store chain Whole Foods Market. Planet Green is Discovery Communications' "new 24/7 eco-lifestyle television network", set to launch in June 2008.

The press release quotes Emeril:
Since my early days as a chef, I've always been passionate about using the freshest quality ingredients from farmers, fisherman and ranchers. I try a little harder every day to think greener and be respectful of our environment and our resources. On 'Emeril Green' we'll unearth how easy and fun it is to cook with what's fresh, tasty and in-season and find smart ways to make each day a little greener for you and your family.
The show harks back to one of the oldest formulas when sponsors like soap companies or insurance companies back particular shows – think Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. It also is tied to the trend of in-store television like BordersTV that airs authors talking about their books. In this case, Emeril is actually in Whole Foods, talking about what consumers can buy and make from Whole Foods' products.

Discovery Channel

One thing Emeril won't be cooking with is foie gras, because Whole Foods isn't selling it.

Super Chef wonders if Emeril has the Oprah touch – the clout to make consumers who watch the show do their shopping exclusively at Whole Foods?
