No Foie Gras for Prince Charles
By JULIETTE ROSSANT![]() With all eyes on Prince Harry's ten weeks in Afghanistan, let's hope the media does not give as much news time to his father's decision to ban foie gras from the royal residences. It's not that the bonnie prince shies away when it comes to supporting British beef. No, indeed! British beef is a national matter--you can tell, because the word "British" is involved. However, at times the Prince Charles is able to set aside the burden of his royal crown and make a decision or two for "personal reasons," as The Times of London reports. The government cannot ban the sale of foie gras altogether because that would violate EU law, but it is illegal to produce it in the UK – luckily that isn't much of a problem as the French produce enough for both countries! The Daily Mail of London reports that the Prince is also considering withdrawing the highly coveted royal warrant from one of his favorite shops - the House of Cheese in Tetbury, Gloucestershire - after he discovered it was selling foie gras (to others). Andrew Farquharson, deputy master of the household at Clarence House, revealed that his chefs had been ordered not to buy or serve the food. He said: "The Prince of Wales has a policy that his chefs should not buy foie gras. "His Royal Highness was not aware that the House of Cheese sells foie gras and this will be addressed when their warrant is reviewed." ![]() It appears that the Prince is in a position to make sure that no one else in Tetbury, Gloucestershire buys foie gras either.
