Chef Olympics: Bocuse D'Or 2009

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

Bocuse D'Or

With the Olympics coming this summer, Super Chef turned to another competition where countries are represented as well as individuals: the biennial Bocuse D'Or. Just as the world Olympic teams are being announced, chefs have scarcely a month left to apply to represent the US at the Bocuse D'Or in January 2009.

It turns out that America hasn't racked up a gold medal (or silver or bronze) in this competition – the best American team placement was 6th place in 2003. This time around the US committee is stacked with super chefs, led by Chairman Daniel Boulud,, President Thomas Keller, and a culinary advisory board with 25 top chefs including Dan Barber, John Besh, Mario Batali, Michel Bouit, Tom Colicchio, and even Rocco DiSpirito.

The first step is to write a 750 word essay about why you want to represent America, and fill out an application, available here. Next eight semi-finalist will be chosen to compete at the Bocuse D'Or USA competition in September 2008 in Orlando, Fl.

The winning team walks away with 20,000 Euros ($31,070), and a whole lot of glory. So why kill yourself to get onto Top Chef, Iron Chef and the rest? Go for the gold!
