20 Courses with Thomas Keller and Grant Achatz
By JULIETTE ROSSANT![]() ![]() Choose two chefs who you would like to see cook together and it would be hard to think of a more exalted pair than Thomas Keller and Grant Achatz. Together, they represent the two most lauded chefs in the United States. They are, perhaps coincidently, both coming out with cookbooks this fall. To publicize their cookbooks, and their talents, they are cooking three dinners of 20 courses each – ten alternating courses by each chef – at Per Se in New York on Nov. 11, at Alinea in Chicago on Dec. 2, and at the French Laundry in Yountville on Dec. 9. Even at $1,500 a person with wine pairings, the 65 places for each dinner will no doubt go fast. The dinner is billed not as a dual or competition, but: Celebrating the mentor and his protégé, the contrasting styles, the shared commitment to excellence, and the release of their new books Under Pressure and Alinea ![]() Of course diners will also get a signed copy both books. No sign that any of the money goes to charity - just to the lavish ingredients, the talent, and the sheer extravagance of a $1,500 meal. Finally, a meal approaches the economic importance of a piece of Art. Now, who else would you like to see cook together? If I were still single maybe I could justify the price tag ... certainly many of greater means who will pop for this, and what a culinary arts experience it will be.
As for other duos I'd like to see ... Frank Bonanno & Thomas Keller, Grant Achatz and Richard Blais, Alice Waters and Tracey Dejardins
i just blogged about this myself... this is a tough one for me... i really respect both chefs tremendously, and i'm sure the meal was terrific (for the price, i certainly hope it was!) but this level of excess in these difficult times? it seems a bit out of touch really.
