Board Books: Foodie Babies Wear Bibs
By JULIETTE ROSSANT You might think that board books are for babies. And most of the time, you'd be right. But a good cardboard book is really for the person actually reading the words. After all, let's face it: babies don't understand the English language all that well (most of them, that is). But Foodie Babies Wear Bibs (Tricycle Press 2008) by Michelle Sinclair Colman and illustrated by Nathalie Dion is a bit different. It's a book for foodie parents who are experiencing their first blush of parenthood and wondering when their babies won't have to wear bibs (some never take them off). It's the seventh in this series of Urban Babies Wear Black. The drawings are clever: very round tikes and their very chic, thin parents – mothers dressed in 60s go-go boots. There are plenty of fun designs that weave a patter all over each picture to delight the eye of a little one. On one page, while a parent beats cake batter on a counter, the baby is tucked away in a cabinet playing with pots and pans: "Foodie babies know their way around a kitchen." On the next page the text reads: "Foodie babies share small plates." With a picture of mom being pelted with peas, and the small plates spread out on the table in front of the high chair. Foodie Babies Wear Bibs is just the kind of book to bring to your next dinner party – your hosts can read.
