Halloween: Pumpkin Town!
By JULIETTE ROSSANT Who would enjoy Katie McKy's Pumpkin Town (Houghton Mifflin 2008) better, Whittaker Chambers or Alger Hiss? The story follows five brothers who grow pumpkins. They keep the best seeds from the biggest pumpkins for the next year's crop and toss the duller, smaller seeds away. But one gusty, dusty October day when Jose and his brothers took the lesser seeds to the edge of the field and flung them, the wind caught those seeds and carried them and didn't let them loose until they fell like rain down on the distant town….The boys get rewarded when they do the right thing and help the townspeople get rid of the pumpkins which have taken over. The town rewards them with tasty watermellons. But the story doesn't stop there. Sometimes too much of a good thing is just too much! The illustrations by Pablo Bernasconi pop off the page and give little kids their first taste of cubism. What could be better for holiday reading?
