Calef Brown: Soup for Breakfast
By JULIETTE ROSSANT Get Soup for Breakfast (Houghton Mifflin 2008) just to read the three wonderful food poems in the slim children's book – and then read all the rest! Calef Brown is a funny, silly, and frank poet and his illustrations are full of colorful people - you may even recognize a few.As for the title poem: Coffee drinkers often scoff,That's simple, direct and fun. The soup in question is Cream of Broccoli. Many people around the world do start their day with soup: Turks sometimes eat Lentil Soup , the Japanese might have a bowl of Miso. Why not try some with your kids? They can admire the man in the picture eating his huge bowl of Broccoli Broth, though he is quite purple and wears unusual square glasses. And what is that behind him? Palm trees? Super Chef was charmed by Painting on Toast in which the artist applies different kinds of jam, cream cheese, honey, and butter to create his masterpiece. Then there is the poem Donuts…but we give too much away. Get this book and have fun!
