Sam Kass: Another Chef in the White House
| By JULIETTE ROSSANT There is a change in the White House kitchen. ![]() Sam Kass, a Chicago chef and caterer who cooked for the Obama family previously, will be joining the culinary team led by Cris Comerford according to The New York Times: A spokeswoman for Michelle Obama, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, said Mr. Kass would not be the only cook preparing the family’s meals, but “he knows what they like, and he happens to have a particular interest in healthy food and local food.”That could give Chef Cris more time to prepare banquets, leaving Chef Sam to take care of the First Family's needs. The Times article adds that a vegetable garden on the White House grounds might also happen, a suggestion raised by many including Alice Waters. SuperChef wonders if it really make sense for the White House to have a kitchen garden? In order to support local farmers, the White House needs to buy from them. If they are growing their own crops - and farmers would have to be hired to do so - there might be little need to buy from outside farms, except for a large banquet. Super Chef suggests that Chef Sam might like to start teaching Malia and Sasha Obama about food and cooking, thereby encourage other children to learn about what they eat and how it gets to the table.
