City-Lit Paris

By JULIETTE ROSSANT

City-Lit Paris Anyone who has traveled abroad knows that more than likely they'll be asked when they return "What was it like?" Many a traveler has delayed returning home in fear of not yet having an answer. Understanding a place usually means understanding its history and its rapidly changing present. What you need is a really great guide – not just where to stay and eat, but a guide that explores how others have answered that question.

If you are going to Europe, then Super Chef recommends grabbing one of the City-Lit books on Paris, London, Dublin or other cities from British publisher Oxygen before you go.

City-Lit Paris is a compendium of great writing about the city from 70 writers – including a large section on Le Menu:
Agnes Caterine Poirier: Touche
Adam Gopnik: Paris to the Moon
Jeremy Mercer: Books, Baguettes, and Bedbugs
Alex Kapranos: Sound Bites
Gertrude Stein: Paris France
Edmond de Goncourt: Pages from the Goncourt Journal
Janelle McCulloch: La Vie Parisienne
Colette Rossant: Return to Paris
Stephen Downes: Paris on a Plate
Stephen Clarke: A Year in the Merde
W. Scott Haine: The World of the Paris Café
Stephen Clarke also wrote the introduction to the book.

Once you are done reading about food, read the sections on famous Parisians, Sex in the City, and more. You'll know how to answer that question: "What was it like?"
