Easter: Chocolate for Breakfast
By JULIETTE ROSSANT Easter is a tough time if you are a chocoholic. After all, kids get to gorge themselves on bunnies and chicks with abandon, while their parents and adult friends look on with growing hunger pangs, trying to break off an ear or a bit of wing...or do they? Open Barbara Passino's Chocolate for Breakfast (Hoberman 2009) and there is plenty of proof that adults can indulge to their heart's content with chocolate goodies they don't have to share with the kids. Easter morning? Turn to the All-American section and you'll find Chocolate Omelet with Blueberries in a Pinot Noir Sauce (pp. 181-3). The egg omelet, made with optional Cointreau, is stuffed with a chocolate filling and topped with a blueberry sauce. What about Chocolate Tacos (pp. 27-8) for lunch? ![]() Barbara's are spicy with cayenne pepper and cinnamon. They are accompanied by a vibrant photo of the fruit-stuffed taco by British photographer Marc Hoberman. She includes in each section plenty of non-chocolate recipes like Chile Unrellenos (pp. 27-8) with a filo crust, and Jicama Slaw (p. 31) in case you want to veer away from the sweets for a bit…but you can always go back to chocolate at dinner! What about Chocolate Pasta with Sauteed Strawberries (p. 72)? Wait a minute … first grab a mid-afternoon café with Chocolate Hazelnut Biscotti (p. 89)? So, this year leave the foil wrapped bunnies to the kids and explore Chocolate for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and more. While I love chocolate bunnies and malted eggs, this chocolate food sounds very intriguing. We used to have a chocolatier in the City who also ran a cafe serving chocolate pasta that I regret never trying...
