Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker

By JULIETTE ROSSANT Sometimes a gift is a solution. Throw a birthday party for kids these days and you are bound to come across a few food allergies. How do you make it fun for everyone when one of your guests can't eat gluten (Celiac disease)? The solution? Get a Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker from Jakks Pacific and let the kids make their own gluten-free cupcakes. Recently, Super Chef invited four discerning junior gourmets to take a spin with the Cupcake Maker. The idea is that you make individual cupcakes (chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon-sugar and red velvet) out of cake mix and water. They cook in 30 seconds to cook in the microwave. Then you make frosting out of frosting mix and water, also in four flavors, and frost the cupcakes using a dispensing machine that whirls the cupcakes around. It was messy. It was tasty. It comes with colorful sprinkles that were a big hit. It has no gluten so everyone could eat the same thing. Verdict: They all loved it. They liked the plastic utensils. They liked the mixing. They liked watching a cake bake in 30 seconds. (Move over Easy-Bake Oven) They liked the crayon-shaped frosting dispenser. It's a bit challenging getting the frosting the right consistency, so that it doesn't fly off the cupcake – but kids like a challenge. They liked making a mess. Parents have to help with a couple of steps, but the kids can do practically everything themselves - one cupcake at a time. Don't let the name put you off – or the bit of pink (there is some baby blue too). Boys love it, too. The levers and contraptions, the measuring, the space age speed that the cupcakes cook in the microwave will impress any 8-year old. The only complaint: the cupcakes aren't as good as Mom's. Shucks. If the kids haven't had enough, then they can check out the game website and even play a cupcake game.
