He is one of America’s preeminent sommeliers and wine director for Chef Daniel Boulud‘s Dinex Group‘s growing number of restaurants. But innovation and technology have long been key to selling wine and spirits. One of the first uses of ereaders was to display and help customers navigate through the long wine lists in restaurants.
Daniel has just announced that he will be holding live wine auctions conducted via Twitter.
The auction features value-driven bottles to purchase for future enjoyment at New York City’s db Bistro Moderne. From his legendary “La Paulée” events to the big bottle offerings at Bar Boulud, and now his Twitter wine auctions, these are all experiences Johnnes believes encourage dialogue between wine professionals and consumers, and enhance the pleasure of sharing wine. “Wine shouldn’t always be so serious,” says Johnnes.
Wine sales are linked to food sales – especially when you are bidding for wine to be drunk in a particular restaurant in a particular time period. Smart.

Just how does the Twitter wine auction work?
Each week Daniel Johnnes and his team of sommeliers in Boulud’s restaurants select a bottle to offer at auction for consumption within the following two weeks over dinner at db Bistro Moderne. Every Monday at 12pm, db Bistro Moderne’s sommelier Caleb Ganzer reveals the world-class bottle via Twitter. Count on remarkably modest opening bids and selections perfectly poised to pair with Chef Laurent Kalkotour’s cuisine. The public is invited to bid on the wines via Twitter as follows:
